President Petro Poroshenko informed that the assessment mission of the
European Commission noted significant progress of Ukraine in the fulfillment of
requirements on visa-free regime with the EU.
In his conversation with media following the negotiations with the
President of Latvia, Petro Poroshenko noted that at the beginning of November,
the Parliament of Ukraine would consider recent legislative amendments Ukraine
must implement for the introduction of visa-free regime.
According to the President, Ukraine has made important anti-corruption
steps, particularly the establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau
and the post of special anti-corruption prosecutor. He informed that there were
30 candidates for that post.
The President is hopeful that all anti-corruption cases would be
conveyed to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau starting from December 1 in
order to carry out proper independent investigation and bring corrupt officials
to liability. The President noted that the number of people brought to justice
for corruption had increased 17 times compared to the previous periods.
“It demonstrates that we have a political will to struggle against
corruption. We have elaborated a system of struggle against that. And it is not
only the aspiration for the visa-free regime. We are willing to reform the
country. It is a decisive position of the entire Ukrainian nation,” the
President said.
The President reminded that it had been the Eastern Partnership Summit
in Riga, which had clearly demonstrated that there were no political obstacles
to the introduction of visa-free regime for Ukraine. The only thing left to be
done is to fulfill technical tasks enshrined in the Action Plan for
Liberalization of Visa Regime with the EU.
In his turn, the President of Latvia stands for the intensification of
people to people contacts. And the visa-free regime will contribute to that.
According to him, the visa-free regime is an important instrument for Ukraine’s
integration into the EU.
