Transit of Russian trucks unhampered via Ukraine - minister

"As of today, transit of auto transport moves unhampered," Infrastructure Minister Andrey Pivovarsky said, adding its movement was not blocked

KIEV, February 27. /TASS/. Russian trucks are moving via the Ukrainian territory unhampered, Infrastructure Minister Andrey Pivovarsky told the 112 Ukraine television channel on Saturday.

"As of today, transit of auto transport is unhampered," Pivovarsky said, adding the movement was not blocked.

The minister is confident that the nationalists protesting in Ukraine’s automobile roads do not hamper the transit of trucks and their campaign is peaceful.

"Transit has never been blocked," he said.

Apart from that, he refuted the reports of Ukraine’s nationalist party Svoboda that 14 trucks had been stopped in the Chernovtsy region.

"Blocking of 14 trucks is a fake which is not confirmed," the minister said.

Some of the Russian trucks do not move along the Ukrainian roads but stay on the curbs as the drivers wished so, he said.

"At the moment all the trucks which crossed into Ukraine over the past 24 hours have passed via the Ukrainian territory, except those in which the drivers are resting …," he said adding the transit of Russian trucks was blocked neither in the Rovno, Zhitomir regions nor in Transcarpathia.

Talks with Russia and other neighboring countries, including Poland, on transport transit via Ukraine are underway, he said.

"We want to reach permanent agreements," Pivovarsky said.

On February 11, Ukrainian radicals in the Transcarpathian Region announced an unlimited campaign to block the transit of Russian trucks. Later they were joined by radically-minded activists in nine regions: Volyn, Rovno, Lvov, Transcarpathia, Ivano-Frankovsk, Zhitomir, Vinnitsa, Sumy and Chernovtsy.

In response, on February 14, Russia halted the transit of Ukrainian transport companies’ trucks through territory. On February 15, the Ukrainian government officially announced suspension of transit traffic of trucks registered in Ukraine.

On February 24, the Ukrainian government decided to reopen the transit of Russian trucks and instructed the Interior Ministry and the customs service to ensure their safety.

Russia and Ukraine agreed to resume motor freight traffic between two countries from February 25.
