The need to expand the scope of the Ukrainian language in printed mass media

According to polls conducted in spring 2017 by a number of sociological companies, 92% of Ukrainian citizens (without taking into account the occupied territories) consider themselves as ethnic Ukrainians, 6% - ethnic Russians, 1.5% - representatives of other nationalities. More than two thirds of respondents (68%) consider Ukrainian as their native language, 14% - Russian, 17% - both Ukrainian and Russian equally.

At the same time, in Ukraine, the share of newspapers in Ukrainian in the total circulation of newspapers for the year is only 32%, while in the Russian language - 62%.


Hence, the last week in the Verkhovna Rada, the bill No. 8018 "On Amendments to Article 24 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Principles of the State Language Policy" regarding the expansion of the sphere of application of the Ukrainian language in printed mass media", which proposes to increase the Ukrainian language quota - the share of the use of the state language printed media up to 50%.
