Prime Minister of Ukraine: Expanding of the Holodomor Victims Memorial is a matter of honor, spirituality and respect for history

The construction of the National Museum "Holodomor Victims Memorial" is a matter of honor, spirituality and respect for history for every citizen. That is why, it is timely the resumption of the second stage of the museum, the continuation of historical research, and the involvement of wide public in the preservation of the memory about millions of people - first of all, through the establishment of the Museum's Supervisory Board and the audit of all construction costs. The Head of Government said at a special meeting.

"Building of the Holodomor Victims Memorial is a matter of honor. When we lose our loved ones, we erect a monuments, we are trying to immortalize their memory. But here we are talking about millions of people who became victims of the artificial famine. We have a country with wonderful lands in which there had never been a reason for starvation. Those millions of dead should be eternalized, we must conduct research to restore historical justice, and to build a memorial complex", urged Volodymyr Groysman.
He stressed that all activities should be transparent, because the challenge is "not just to build walls, but to fill them with content."
"And here it is crucial to ensure that one part is a share of the Government, and another part is the contribution of each Ukrainian. That is why we see it necessary to set up a construction fund to attract everyone who is not indifferent", suggested the Prime Minister. "A Supervisory Board should be set up, its chairman appointed – a person who has credibility of citizens. Audits (of all processes) will be conducted online, so that everyone could see how much money and for what purposes is spent in order to avoid delays in construction activities. We have already launched this process, we have to finish in 36 months, when the museum will be completely shaped."
Background
In December 2017, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a draft project of the Museum reconstruction with the estimated cost of UAH 772 million developed by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. According to the plans of architects, the second stage of the construction of the Memorial will be "hidden" inside the Dnipro slope, which is now being fortified, thereby providing an opportunity not to change the landscape and to preserve the idea of the Museum as the candles of memory.
In April, Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman, together with members of the Government, has placed the capsule before the construction of the second stage of the National Museum and stressed on the country’s obligation to restore the memory about the innocent victims. The Head of the Government placed a special emphasis on the fact that expanding of the Museum is a major project, which encapsulates construction activities, further research, formation of a large exposition that would tell the entire world "what has been withhold for decades".
