More than 40 countries agreed to take part in a peacekeeping operation in the east of Ukraine to establish peace, restore sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as stated by President Petro Poroshenko.
“More than 40 countries agreed to take part in a peacekeeping operation today - from Canada and my negotiations with (Prime Minister - ed.) Justin Trudeau, from the G7 representatives to the EU countries that are not members of NATO: Austria, Sweden, Finland and many others,” the Head of State noted.
He stresses that the issue of peacekeepers is very important for Ukraine. Petro Poroshenko said that the opinion on the introduction of a mission in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN had radically changed recently. One and a half or two years ago, "the world did not want to listen about peacekeepers", arguing that it would a big expense to ensure the work of the mission and that there was supposedly a lack of desire to help our state in establishing peace and returning the lands captured by Russians to the Ukrainian sovereignty.
"Today, an atmosphere is created that peacekeepers are needed, that it is impossible without peacekeepers. And you, Mr. Putin, cannot explain to the world why you are against that. It means that it is on you - the responsibility for the daily wounds and murders of Ukrainian military and Ukrainian civilians, it is your personal responsibility for the war and aggression against our state," the President emphasized.
He stresses that Vladimir Putin can easily stop the death of civilians, Ukrainian soldiers who defend their native land. "You can do this very easily - just don’t use the right of veto (when making a decision in the UN Security Council - ed.). No one needs more from you," the Head of State noted.
Petro Poroshenko also emphasized that the mandate of peacekeepers should be extended to all occupied territories. According to him, the Russian proposal to use peacekeepers as an escort for OSCE observers sounded very strange. "Escort is a bit different thing. We need a full-fledged peacekeeping mission that will have the mandate, authority and ability to disarm Russia-controlled illegal armed units of Russian or local origin,” the President noted.
According to him, peacekeepers will help disarm, establish peace and necessary security conditions for the beginning of a political settlement through local elections. This will allow Ukrainian political parties, companies, Ukrainian mass media, international observers to participate in these elections that will guarantee free expression of will of the citizens, including the internally displaced persons who were forced to leave the occupied territory.
"Therefore, the peacekeepers are extremely important. The one who is against the peacekeepers is the one who supports the war. And we will not allow killing Ukrainians," the Head of State stressed.
The President noted that Ukraine was ready to submit the given issue to the UN Security Council immediately “as soon as Russia accepts the position of the whole world”. “Many members of the Security Council are willing to support the agreed project,” he said.
Prior to this, Ukraine, personally President Poroshenko, addressed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with a request to send a special assessment mission to the east of Ukraine, which will establish the required headcount of the peacekeeping mission, terms for its deployment, preconditions and cost. "And practical work on the implementation of this project began,” the Head of State said, noting that he was doing everything possible to ensure the deployment of the mission already in 2018.
